Top 5 Tips for Homestay Students

At S&B Automotive Academy, apprentices who live too far away to travel to our Bristol site have the opportunity to stay with a local host family. Our homestay providers come from all walks of life and offer accommodation for apprentices from all over the country.

Whilst staying with a homestay provider can be daunting, it can be a great experience and you could end up with friends for life.

Maximise your homestay experience by following our top five tips.

Communication is Key

You need to communicate with your homestay provider. Whilst they’ll know a few things about you from paperwork, they won’t know the things that make you, you. Are there certain foods you don’t like? Do you have any allergies? What are your favourite things to cook? Communicating and being open with your homestay provider from the get-go will mean there’s no awkwardness around the dinner table, and you may find you have a lot in common!

Stick to House Rules

Whilst your homestay providers will want you to feel welcome, it’s important to understand that there may be some house rules. If they don’t bring it up first, ask them what the rules are. Having someone stay in their home will be daunting for them too, and it will be reassuring for them to see you’re willing to stick to any rules or routines. Many homestay providers would greatly appreciate you being so thoughtful!

Sit Down for Dinner- or Offer to Cook

It’s no secret that food is the way to everyone’s hearts. It brings people together, so trying your best to be present at meal times is a great way to show your enthusiasm and respect for your host provider. Why not offer to cook once every two weeks? Try recreating your favourite dish from home- your homestay provider will appreciate the help and a taste from home will curb any feelings of sadness. Alternatively, offer to set the table or wash up once in a while!

Get to Know your Homestay Provider

When you have a spare ten minutes, sit down with your homestay provider and get to know them. Where do they work? What do they do for fun? Whilst it’s important to respect their personal space and not force a relationship on them, many homestay providers will love your interest and enthusiasm. You might even get an invite out to their next cinema-trip or football game!

Remember it’s Temporary

Whilst you may miss your home comforts and your mum’s cooking, it’s important to remember that your homestay experience is temporary and complaining is simply not worth it. Your homestay provider will have their own way of doing things and after all, they are doing you a favour. Choose a way to document the good time you have in the new city; it will be a great reminder of this time in your life and within a few months you’ll be able to head home with countless memories to share.
