How does it work?

An apprentice is someone who is employed by a business and trained between the ages of 16-24. Apprentices earn a salary while they learn and it gives them the skills that employers want. Whatever your ambitions, an apprenticeship offers you a fantastic head start in your working life and you’ll make lots of friends along the way!

There are two types of apprenticeship*:

  • Intermediate Apprenticeship (includes Level 2 NVQ/VCQ)
  • Advanced Apprenticeship (includes Level 3 NVQ/VCQ)

Both types have the same structure. S&B Automotive Academy will help you to make the right choice.

*Applicable to England. For apprentices employed in Wales and Scotland, Foundation Modern Apprenticeships and Modern Apprenticeships are available.

Apprenticeship structure
Think of an apprenticeship as a kit that you need to build. It’s made up of a number of different parts that you have to complete. Each part gives you a qualification and when you have achieved all these, you will receive your apprenticeship certificate. All qualifications within the apprenticeship are awarded by IMI Awards which is part of The Institute of the Motor Industry. This organisation is the professional association for people who work in the UK automotive sector.

What training will be provided?
Training is provided at work (your employer) and at specialist training provider (S&B Automotive Academy) on block release (usually six one-week blocks per year).

The successful applicant will be allocated a training consultant who will support and monitor progress with the apprentice and employer to ensure progress is made towards your final qualification.

The apprenticeship framework comprises

  • Vocational Related Qualification (VRQ)
  • Vocational Competence Qualification (VCQ)
  • *Functional Skills at Level 1 Mathematics, English, ICT**

*Applicable to England. For Wales & Scotland, Essential Skills & Core Skills apply. Mandatory unless exempt with GCSE's at Grade C-A*, Key Skills at Level 1-2 or Functional Skills Level 1-2.

** ICT Functional Skills not applicable for England Skills For Logistics Apprenticeships in Warehousing & Storage and Driving Goods Vehicles
